When the Romefeller Foundation launched an invasion of the Sanc Kingdom, Heero piloted the Epyon into battle. Heero however, did not kill Treize and accepted the Epyon.Īfter boarding the mobile suit, Treize warned Heero not to be a 'winner' when piloting it, meaning that achieving victory should not be on his mind, only the fighting itself. Thus, Treize presented the Epyon Gundam to Heero, when the latter sought him out with the intention of assassinating him. Treize had hoped that a Gundam pilot would come forth to pilot the suit, particularly Heero Yuy. Treize was also able to equip the Epyon's cockpit with a modified Zero System. Treize had a highly developed sense of honor and so designed the suit to be a "dueling" mobile suit, equipping it with short range weaponry only. Treize had been intrigued by the Gundams and their pilots and so designed a Gundam which he called Epyon. Late in AC 195, Treize Khushrenada was relieved of his duties as the Commander of OZ and was placed under house-arrest. Used in close combat, it is of the same type as the Shenlong Gundam's. Mounted on the chest, it for gathering data that the cameras and antennas cannot. Zechs also used a modified version of this system to control the White Fang's Mobile Dolls. Any technical differences compared to the ZERO System is unknown. Known as the Epyon System, it operated the same as the XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero's ZERO System, but the pilot wears a special helmet on their head when using the system. Treize had a modified version of the deadly ZERO System installed in Epyon's cockpit. When using this equipment, the Epyon Shield is mounted on the rear skirt armor. These small wing-like devices use similar technology to OZ-13MSX2 Mercurius's planet defensors and can be either attached to Epyon's forearms in "Defense Mode", generating powerful defensive force field capable of blocking XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero's twin buster rifle, or attached to the beam sword in "Zweihander Mode" to generate a massive beam blade. However, they can damage lightly armored areas such as the sensors, and are ideal for shooting down small, lightly armored targets such as missiles, small vehicles, etc.Īn additional equipment used by Gundam Epyon after Zechs Merquise joins the White Fang in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz: Glory of the Losers manga. A single swipe with this weapon can destroy up to three OZ-06MS Leo.Īdded later by the White Fang, the pair of head-mounted shell firing weapons have a high-rate of fire, but little power and are generally ineffective against mobile suits. It can be used to trip or entangle opponents, and even cut through mobile suits when heated. It mounts a heat rod at the bottom.Ī segmented whip-like chain housed in Epyon's shield. In combat, they can be used to tear through enemy armor.Ī small shield mounted on the left arm, its surface has been treated with an anti-beam coating to provide protection against beam attacks. Mounted on the forearms, they are used as landing gear in MA Mode. This allows the length and the intensity of the beam blade to be adjusted according to the situation, and at maximum level, it can inflict damage severe enough to destroy objects as large as the Space Fortress Bulge. The primary weapon of the Epyon, it is connected directly to the suit's powerplant via a cord as opposed to running on its own internal power source. It is later given additional equipment known as 'Sturm Und Drang' that can be used for both defense and offense. Gundam Epyon EW is Hajime Katoki's redesign of Epyon in a similar fashion to other EW version of the first five Gundams and included in New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop as well as Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz: Glory of the Losers. It resembles a mythological dragon in this mode, however, its primary weapons are inaccessible save for the Epyon Claws which are also used as landing gear in this form. The Epyon can also transform into a "mobile armor" mode for high-speed flight and cruising in space. Treize also installed a modified version of the Zero System known as Epyon System in the cockpit, making this suit a powerful opponent. Its main weapons are a segmented, whip-like heat rod mounted on a shield and a powerful beam sword whose energy is supplied by a direct connection to the Epyon's generator. However, when the suit becomes a part of White Fang, a pair of Vulcan guns are added to the head. In keeping with Treize's philosophy, the Epyon eschews cowardly long-range weapons in favor of chivalrous close combat. 4.1 New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardropīased on data from the OZ-00MS Tallgeese and the other Gundams, the Gundam Epyon was created by Treize Khushrenada while he was placed under confinement by the Romefeller Foundation. This image is reflected in many present day ethical commentaries that fear the de-humanizing and the identity- and authenticity-corrupting effects of psychopharmacology. In Brave New World, soma stands for alienation, de-humanization and superficial mind-numbing pleasure. While the first shows all the treacherous, dangerous and scary aspects of psychopharmacology, the second shows its potentially positive and enhancing effects. The discussions and reflections on soma, in Brave New World, and on moksha-medicine in Island, can be read as two paradigmatic ways of looking at the ethical and philosophical meaning of such substances. Psychopharmacological substances play a significant role in both Brave New World and in Island. In this article I will discuss Huxley’s novels from this perspective, focussing especially on the role of psychopharmacological substances in both books. In this sense, they can be considered as heuristic ‘tools’ to help us think about the possible worlds that technology could bring about. In this article I claim that these two novels can be understood as a kind of elaborate thought experiments of what the world could look like if certain powers and technologies became available to us. Whereas Brave New World vividly depicts a world in which humans have become less-thanhuman by means of biotechnological and socioscientific techniques, Island sketches an idyllic community in which scientific knowledge is carefully employed for the enhancement of the quality of human lives. It is less well known that Huxley has also written a utopian novel, Island (1962), published about 30 years after Brave New World. It is claimed that the debate should not get stuck in an opposition of dystopian and utopian views, but should address important issues that demand attention in our real world: those of evaluation and governance of enhancing psychopharmacological substances in democratic, pluralistic societies.Īldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1932) is a famous and widely known dystopia, frequently called upon in public discussions about biotechnological developments. The second part of the paper draws some further conclusions for the ethical debate on psychopharmacology and human enhancement, by comparing the novels not only with each other, but also with our present reality. This is illustrated by a discussion of the issue of psychopharmacology and authenticity. If we see fiction as a way of imagining what the world could look like, then what can we learn from Huxley’s novels about psychopharmacology and how does that relate to the discussion in the ethical and philosophical literature on this subject? The paper argues that in the current ethical discussion the dystopian vision on psychopharmacology is dominant, but that a comparison between Brave New World and Island shows that a more utopian view is possible as well. This paper will discuss both novels focussing especially on the role of psychopharmacological substances. It is less well known that 30 years later Huxley also wrote a utopian novel, called Island. Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World is a famous dystopia, frequently called upon in public discussions about new biotechnology. At this size, the Streambar makes a nice option for smaller room configurations where sound waves have a shorter distance to travel reflected off of walls. Of course, the room dynamics will play a role in the quality of the experience you hear. On its own, the Streambar’s sound is remarkably wide and clear for a device that measures a mere 2.4 x 14 x 4.2 inches. But what really impressed us is how the quality of sound was elevated to the next level after adding on the aforementioned Roku wireless rear speakers and subwoofer to either device. We were highly impressed with the sound Roku managed to produce from the Roku Soundbar when it was first introduced, and found the Streambar experience was very similar in many respects. The Streambar has many of the same features, including a built-in Roku streaming media player, and the ability to expand the experience down the line by adding on a pair of Roku wireless rear-channel speakers ($149.99 a pair) and/or a Roku Wireless Subwoofer ($179.99).īy itself, the Streambar still let’s you connect to almost any brand or model of television via HDMI/ARC or optical audio cable connections to get genuinely bigger and wider sound than most built-in TV speakers provide in mid and lower-tier television sets. Roku this week officially released the Roku Streambar as the latest addition to the company’s growing line of affordably priced sound-for-video components with built-in Roku media streaming. Straight Outta Compton was made in a matter of weeks for a reported $12,000, and when it came out on August 8th, 1988, it slowly became a hit without much traditional music-industry support, going gold by the following April and platinum by July as momentum built. Thanks to the notoriety around “Fuck tha Police,” which the FBI condemned, and their single “Straight Outta Compton,” whose video was banned from MTV, N.W.A quickly became not just the world’s most dangerous group but also one of its most intriguing. Gangsta rap was already a growing genre when N.W.A released their full-length debut, Straight Outta Compton, but none of the group’s peers inspired the same level of public vitriol or interest. Drugs were an omnipresent part of my life from 2009 to 2014. I did not have the coping skills to properly work through that kind of grief, so I used drugs. I was not prepared to lose my mother at 18 years old. My mother passed away from a sudden heart attack in September 2008. While we as a collective audience have been watching Rue’s story of loss and struggle, I feel like I’ve been watching a version of my own. In the season’s first episode, she takes various drugs and nearly goes into cardiac arrest in the laundry room at a New Year’s Eve party, while in episode 5, she engages in a wide variety of violent and destructive behavior toward everyone around her before ending up in a dangerous situation with a drug dealer to whom she owes a large sum of money. In Season Two, which recently concluded, we’ve seen a deeper examination of Rue’s descent into drug use – a response to grief over the tragic death of her father. It was a heavy episode, but one bound to be followed by another stress-fest, as Nate’s precarious love triangle has finally collapsed, and Rue has reached the point of no return somebody’s going to have to pay for that suitcase.Denayja Reese Courtesy of Taylor Washington / Waylor Photo Contrary to numerous fan theories, Rue makes it out alive, heading back home to safety, but not out of the woods. It’s an incredibly tense scene, in stark contrast to the levity of the police chase - it really feels as though Rue is going to get trapped in this dreadful place. Rue wakes up in Laurie’s apartment, which is filled with sleeping men, suffering comedowns, on the brink of waking up. A subsequent flashback emphasizes Rue’s grief for her dad, another trauma she didn’t really process, pushing her into the numbing embrace of drugs. It’s pretty clear what Laurie’s intentions are for Rue, and for once, Rue seems like a vulnerable kid, out of her element, and completely at the mercy of this school-teacher-turned-monster. Gently, Laurie coaxes Rue into injecting some morphine, and casually remarks on the fact that Rue, being a girl, always has “something people want.” Despite her previous warning to Rue, Laurie acts almost like a nurturing grandma, seemingly understanding that Rue is in no state to pay her back. This is followed by a ridiculous chase, as the police realize something is up, and Rue dodges fast-moving cars like a Looney Tune, seemingly indestructible, just for one scene.īut Rue’s dumb luck doesn’t last, as her desperation takes over and she heads to the house of Laurie, terrifyingly soft-spoken kingpin. Then, another comical attempt at criminality, as Rue bungles her way out of another thievery, managing to calm down a family dog, and escape, despite being caught. After so many episodes teasing the big reveal, this scene feels like another tease, pushing back the fallout for the next episode, as we focus on Rue hitting rock bottom.Ĭlearly, Rue’s still lucid enough to know that Maddy will never, ever wait for the right moment to express her feelings - as soon as her rage bubbles, it bursts like a water balloon, providing a distraction for Rue to grab some jewelry and go.įez has always been there for Rue during her darkest moments, so Rue heads to his house, but tries to steal Grandma Fez’s medicine, leading to the tolerant dealer forcefully throwing her out - even Fez can’t help her. For such a laid-back, seemingly unflappable character, the guy was really good at sparking unnecessary drama.Īfter setting her most valuable relationships aflame, Rue gets to work destroying her friendships, fleeing to Cassie’s house, where her body is beginning to break down from withdrawal, spurting acidic fluids out of both ends, trembling and drenched in sweat.įeeling threatened by the resulting intervention, Rue, unexpectedly, blurts out Cassie’s big secret - her affair with Nate. I hope this isn’t the last we see of him - Dominic Fike has felt like a core member of the Euphoria gang ever since he sauntered into their lives. Elliot seems to be done with all this, and simply walks out, having made Rue’s life exponentially worse.
